Interview with Joyce Boyd
WHO?
Joyce Boyd
WHAT?
Financial Director
WHAT DO YOU ACTUALLY DO?
I am responsible for reconciling and settling Insurer accounts. I have to ensure all premiums are collected and invoices settled by due dates. I am also responsible for balancing our bank accounts and assisting our accountant with reports. My Compliance Officer duties include overseeing our admin department and organising training sessions for our staff.
FIRST SENIOR JOB?
With hindsight I now realise it was balancing the books at the end of each day for a large building society, the only problem was I did not get a senior title or salary for this!
DO YOU WORK FOR LOVE OR MONEY?
Love. If I did not enjoy doing what I do I would give it all up tomorrow and be skint.
WHAT HAS BEEN THE SINGLE MOST IMPORTANT STAGE OF YOUR CAREER?
Starting work in Premier Commercial after a 10 year career break to have a family. Certainly got my brain functioning again!
WHAT GOT YOU WHERE YOU ARE TODAY?
Determination, a lot of hard work and taking a few risks along the way.
ANY REGRETS?
None whatsoever, life is too short.
12-HOUR DAY OR OUT THE DOOR BY FIVE?
As I can also work from home at least a 12-hour day.
EARLY BIRD OR NIGHT OWL?
Varies although I love getting up early when everyone else is sleeping and getting some work done. The house is so quiet that the guinea pig does tend to hear me and starts squeaking for some celery.
TECHNOGEEK OR TECHNOPHOBE?
I like to think I am a technogeek but I am sure Crawford would have a laugh as I cannot even work our television controls! I get by.
BEST UNDER PRESSURE OR WELL CHILLED?
A little pressure at the month end when all accounts are due keeps me on my toes. First until the 20th of the month I am well chilled.
CREATIVE OR LOGICAL?
Logical. I did think I was creative until the Art teacher refused to let me sit what was then O'Grade Art after watching me draw a bowl of fruit.
TEAM PLAYER OR LONE WOLF?
Working in accounts means I am very much a lone wolf although I do sneak through to admin in a work capacity of course to catch up.
OFFICE ESSENTIALS?
A Calculator is a must for my job.
WHERE WILL YOU BE FIVE YEARS FROM NOW?
Same job but maybe I could have an assistant or 2?
YOU'VE WON THE LOTTERY: WHAT DO YOU DO?
Gave up on the lottery a long time ago but if I came into money I would make a donation to Yorkhill Children's Hospital who do a wonderful job of looking after my son. I would keep on working as long as I was having fun.
PERFECT RECIPE FOR WINDING DOWN?
I love to run although 5k is about my limit. A nice glass of red works for me too.
WHAT'S YOUR WORST HABIT?
Having a nice glass of red to wind down more than I do a 5k run!
WHICH PUBLIC FIGURE (ALIVE OR DEAD) DO YOU MOST ADMIRE?
Tony Blair, in fact any Prime Minister of our Country. Imagine the pressure!
WHICH PUBLIC FIGURE (ALIVE OR DEAD) WOULD YOU MOST LIKE TO GO FOR A BEER WITH?
It would have to be Michael Parkinson - imagine the stories he could tell.
